NYS Sales Tax and the Paid Program

Have you been running an online-based or service-based business in New York State? If so you may have recently seen a letter from New York’s PAID program (and freaked out). New York State as well as other states that have become bust from the economy are looking for money and they’re getting desperate. What they are doing is

What’s ridiculous is that they are claiming unpaid and owed sales tax from businesses that have never filed to pay sales tax in the state of New York and never provided taxable services. When you call the nys tax office the reps sound all high and mighty like you are a bad person that has evaded the system and is in debt to them forever… all while providing little or no answers to your questions as to why or what you are being billed for. The only people that hold any answers are the billing dept and they only answer questions that you ask. If you don’t ask the right question you’re time on their phone system is a complete waste.

If you know you are 100% in the right and do not owe any money let the state know this and provide them with information to back it up.

Suggestions for nys paid program:

- Don’t take no for an answer.
- If you owe sales tax make sure you know exactly how much you really owe.
- Make sure you have forms that you filed to prove or disprove something they are claiming.
- Make sure you are speaking with a billing rep or a manager before you start asking important questions
- If you really don’t know feel free to ask a cpa accountant for advice
